AI Use Policy

Learn the limited role of AI-assisted image tools at Science Report and the human review, verification and disclosure standards that apply.

Science Report may use AI-assisted tools for selected illustrations, while human editors remain responsible for editorial judgment, source verification, the accuracy of surrounding text and the final decision to publish, replace, clarify or remove a visual.

Current Use

  • Article drafts: No — published article text is not currently generated through this use
  • Translation: No — AI-assisted translation is not part of the current publishing use described here
  • Published summaries: No — AI is not currently used to create reader-facing article summaries
  • Source monitoring: No — AI is not currently used as the publication’s source-monitoring process
  • Selected illustrations and article cover images: Yes — limited to visual use under human editorial control

Human Editorial Control

Humans select topics, review sources, write and edit articles, check material claims and make final publication and correction decisions. AI output is not treated as evidence, an expert source or a substitute for verifying the underlying subject.

Prohibited Uses

  • Fabricating or altering sources, papers, citations or links
  • Inventing quotations, experts, events, observations or datasets
  • Creating false credentials, biographies, affiliations or institutional relationships
  • Publishing unverified claims as fact or using AI output to conceal uncertainty
  • Impersonating real people or attributing statements to them without evidence
  • Presenting synthetic images as documentary photographs, scientific observations or other evidence

AI Images

AI-generated or AI-assisted visuals may be used as conceptual illustrations. Their purpose is to represent an idea or subject visually, not to reproduce a verified scene, and they should not be presented as authentic photographs of real discoveries, experiments, missions, medical outcomes or events.

Where a synthetic image could reasonably be mistaken for a documentary or scientific record, it should be labeled as an AI-generated illustration, AI-assisted illustration, conceptual image or similar description that makes its non-documentary nature clear.

Sensitive Topics

AI-assisted visuals connected to medicine, health, safety or other high-impact subjects must not imply a diagnosis, guaranteed treatment outcome, individual result or verified event that did not occur. Visual clarity must not come at the cost of medical or factual accuracy.

Corrections

Readers may report concerns to [email protected] and should identify the page and visual involved. Misleading or materially inaccurate visuals may be reviewed and, where appropriate, replaced, removed or clarified.
